Females can be distinguished from males by their smaller, smoother pronotal bumps and relatively smooth antennae. Adult males have more prominent horn-like bumps and noticeably hairier antennae.

Madagascar hissing roaches cannot fly or jump. However, specialized pads on their feet allow them to climb glass, smooth plastic, and many other surfaces, so a secure enclosure is required.
