Adult Size and Appearance

Adult Black Tiger hissing roaches have broad, heavily armored, wingless bodies with predominantly black to deep-mahogany coloration. Individual size, coloration, and markings may vary naturally.

Adult males have prominent horn-like pronotal bumps and thicker, hairier antennae. Adult females have smaller, smoother pronotal bumps and relatively smooth antennae.

Both sexes can produce an audible hiss by forcing air through specialized breathing openings. Males may also hiss, posture, and engage in physical displays during territorial and courtship interactions.

Establishing a Black Tiger Breeding Colony

Keep the breeding group in a secure, well-ventilated enclosure with a tightly fitted lid. Black Tiger hissing roaches can climb glass and smooth plastic, so a dependable escape barrier is required.

Provide abundant hiding and climbing surfaces using egg flats, cork bark, cardboard tubes, or similar materials. Additional surface area helps reduce crowding and gives males separate areas in which to establish territories.

Maintain temperatures around 78°F to 85°F to encourage activity, growth, and reproduction. Cooler temperatures may slow breeding and development.

To preserve the Black Tiger line, house these roaches separately from other hissing-roach species and varieties with which they could potentially crossbreed.

Feeding and Colony Care

Provide a nutritious dry roach diet supplemented with small portions of fresh fruits and vegetables for additional moisture and nutrition.

Remove uneaten fresh food regularly to help prevent mold, fermentation, fruit flies, and excessive moisture.

Provide good ventilation, moderately humid conditions, and access to both moist and drier areas without allowing the enclosure to remain excessively wet.

Use a safe water source that cannot drown newborn nymphs.
