Begonia rajah

Fresh cutting as seen in the photo. Each cutting is selected with the necessary stem, node, rhizome, or growth mass required for propagation.

Begonia rajah is a striking rhizomatous Begonia species prized for its deep mahogany to bronze foliage, raised leaf texture, and contrasting green venation. Its compact growth habit, dramatic coloration, and need for stable humidity make it a favorite among Begonia collectors and an exceptional addition to terrariums, vivariums, and indoor tropical plant collections.

Mature Size: Typically reaches 4–8 in. (10–20 cm) tall and wide, with mature leaves reaching around 4 in. (10 cm) under ideal conditions.

Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

Rarity: Rare ⭐⭐⭐

Plant Care

Light: Low to bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun and excessive heat, which can reduce the rich leaf coloration.

Water: Keep the substrate lightly moist but never waterlogged. Avoid allowing the roots to sit wet.

Humidity: Prefers very high humidity and is best grown in a terrarium or enclosed humid environment.

Temperature: Prefers 65–78°F (18–26°C), with cooler stable conditions preferred over hot conditions.

Soil: Well-draining, moisture-retentive mix rich in organic matter, with good airflow around the roots.

Propagation

Begonia rajah is readily propagated from leaf, petiole, wedge, or rhizome cuttings. Place cuttings in moist sphagnum moss or a well-draining propagation mix under high humidity until roots and new growth develop.
