What are springtails, and why should I add them to my vivarium?

Springtails are tiny hexapods that consume mold, waste, and decaying matter, keeping bioactive substrates clean and preventing harmful buildup.

How do springtails help maintain a healthy bioactive setup?

They eat mold, fungus, and organic waste, helping process material before it accumulates, supports unwanted microbial growth, or creates odors in your vivarium.

What's the difference between springtails and other cleanup crews, like isopods?

Springtails are especially useful for fungal growth and fine organic debris, while isopods are generally better suited to larger detritus like feces, shed skin, and decaying plant material.

Can springtails be kept as pets, or are they only for bioactive vivariums?

Springtails are primarily used as a cleanup crew in bioactive setups, though some bug enthusiasts maintain cultures for observation and breeding.

How long do springtails live, and how fast do they reproduce?

Depending on species and conditions, individual springtails may live for weeks to several months, while established cultures can persist much longer through ongoing reproduction.

What should I do if my springtail population dies off or becomes overpopulated?

For die-offs, check moisture levels and add organic material; for overpopulation, reduce feeding or start a new culture using some of the existing population.
